Initial academic advising for a graduate student is usually assigned to the program director or a temporary advisor. Following this initial advisor assignment, the graduate student may be assigned to a permanent advisor or a graduate committee. The purpose of graduate academic advising is to ensure coordination on the course of study between the student and program faculty and leadership.
