2026-2027 Academic Catalog

Change of Major

Any undergraduate student may initiate a request to change majors. Change of major may occur within the same academic unit or across different academic units. Students initiate this process by contacting their advisor and submitting a formal change of major request.  Change of major may also be referred to as "internal transfer."

Some majors and programs have specific requirements that determine student eligibility. These requirements are defined and administered by the academic unit offering the program.

Eligibility and Review

  • Students may request a change of major at any point in their academic career, but are discouraged from making changes during their final term as degree requirements and graduation planning should be finalized prior to that point.
    • For students in their first term, academic units may consider available academic information, including pre-admission credentials and/or early academic performance at the University of Dayton, as applicable.
  • Admission to specific majors or programs is determined by the receiving academic unit based on its defined requirements. Criteria may include prior academic performance, completion of prerequisite coursework, and other program-specific requirements. Academic units are responsible for clearly communicating these criteria to students.
  • When a student changes their major, they will be placed into the active catalog year in effect at the time of the change. Students who entered under a prior catalog year will be expected to meet the associated curriculum requirements.
  • Academic units are responsible for reviewing change of major requests and making decisions in a timely manner. Decisions will be communicated to the student and the appropriate offices.
