Academic Standing
A student’s academic standing is determined by their cumulative grade-point average (GPA) at the end of each term. The Registrar posts the appropriate academic standing to the student’s permanent record.
To be in good academic standing, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 at the end of their first term and all subsequent terms. For part-time and transfer students, a block of 12 semester credit hours is considered equivalent to one term. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is required for graduation, including a minimum 2.0 GPA in the student’s major and minor.
A cumulative GPA below 2.0 places a student on academic probation. The Registrar will notify the student of their probationary status and refer them to their academic dean. While on probation, students are typically encouraged to take a reduced academic load not exceeding 16 semester hours.
Students on probation must complete a contract with the dean’s office outlining the conditions and limitations of their academic activities. Additionally, students are responsible for understanding any GPA requirements that may impact their participation in extracurricular activities. Students on probation must earn a minimum TERM GPA of 2.0 in the term immediately following the academic probation assignment.
Students who meet the minimum term GPA and the conditions outlined in their success plan will be Continued on Probation until they reach a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and return to good standing.
Academic Suspension and Dismissal
Students will be suspended or dismissed from the university under the following conditions:
1. Term GPA Below 1.0:
Students earning a term GPA of less than 1.0, regardless of their cumulative GPA, will be suspended. First-time suspensions include an opportunity to apply for readmission. A second occurrence of a term GPA of less than 1.0 will result in dismissal.
2. Failure to Achieve Good Standing After a Term on Probation:
Students who do not achieve good academic standing by the end of a probationary term will be suspended.
i. The academic dean will evaluate whether the student fulfilled the conditions of their probation success plan, including meeting the minimum term GPA and demonstrating academic progress.
ii. Students meeting the minimum term GPA and completing their success plan may be continued on probation for an additional term without needing to apply for readmission.
Students who were readmitted on probation following a suspension who fail to meet the minimum term GPA or do not fulfill the success plan requirements will be dismissed without eligibility to apply for immediate readmission.
Suspension or dismissal decisions are communicated by the Registrar, with additional guidance provided by the academic dean regarding the student’s eligibility for readmission and required evidence of readiness to return. A dismissed student may be considered for readmission at some point in the future after having successfully completed a specified plan as outlined by their academic dean. Conditions for readmission after dismissal may include but are not limited to: successfully completing a specified number of transferable credit hours at another accredited institution or after a minimum of one year away.
Grade Appeals and Academic Standing
Students suspended or dismissed while awaiting a grade appeal decision remain subject to their current standing. If the grade appeal resolves in the student’s favor, resulting in a GPA adjustment that negates probation or suspension, the student may request reinstatement within 30 days of the appeal decision. Eligibility to return depends on meeting all academic and conduct standards and adherence to university policies, including registration deadlines and attendance requirements.
Course Removal Deadlines
● Suspended Students:
Suspended students who do not secure readmission are removed from their courses three business days before the start of the semester (e.g., Wednesday for a Monday start in Fall/Spring; Friday for Summer sessions starting in May).
Readmission requests must be resolved before the start of classes.
● Dismissed Students:
Students dismissed without eligibility to apply for immediate readmission will be removed from future term courses within three business days of the dismissal decision.
Definitions
Good Academic Standing
A student is in good academic standing if their cumulative GPA is at least 2.0 at the end of each term. This status indicates the student is meeting the minimum academic requirements necessary to remain enrolled and progress toward graduation.
Academic Probation
Academic probation occurs when a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. This status serves as a formal warning that the student is not meeting the minimum academic standards. While on probation, students:
● Are typically limited to a reduced course load (generally no more than 16 semester hours).
● Must attend a meeting and complete a probation success plan with their academic dean, outlining specific strategies to improve their performance.
● Are responsible for monitoring any extracurricular eligibility requirements tied to their GPA.
Continued on Probation
A student is designated as Continued on Probation when they were previously on academic probation, successfully met the minimum 2.0 term GPA requirement, and fulfilled the conditions of their probation success plan, but their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0. This status acknowledges the student’s demonstrated progress and allows them to remain enrolled while continuing efforts to return to good academic standing. Students in this status are expected to:
● Maintain a term GPA of at least 2.0 in subsequent terms.
● Continue adhering to any updated success plan requirements as determined by their academic dean.
Readmitted on Probation
Readmitted on Probation applies to students who were previously suspended for not meeting academic standards and have been granted readmission to the university. This status provides an opportunity for the student to demonstrate academic improvement while acknowledging the need for continued monitoring and support.
While on this status, students:
● Are typically encouraged to take a reduced course load (generally no more than 16 semester hours) to focus on improving their academic performance.
● Must attend a meeting and complete a probation success plan with their academic dean, outlining specific strategies to improve their performance.
● Are responsible for monitoring any GPA-related eligibility requirements for participation in extracurricular activities.
Students readmitted on probation are expected to meet the conditions of their success plan and achieve a minimum term GPA of 2.0 to maintain enrollment and progress toward returning to good academic standing. Failure to meet these conditions will result in dismissal. For the purposes of the Academic Standing Policy, all requirements and expectations for Academic Probation also apply to Readmitted on Probation.
Academic Suspension
Academic suspension is a temporary separation from the university due to failure to meet academic standards. This status is applied under the following conditions:
● A term GPA of less than 1.0, regardless of cumulative GPA
● Failure to return to good academic standing after a term on probation
Suspended students may be eligible to apply for readmission, provided they demonstrate readiness to resume academic activities.
Academic Dismissal
Academic dismissal is a more permanent separation from the university due to continued failure to meet academic standards. This status occurs under the following conditions:
● Failure to meet the minimum GPA or complete the conditions outlined in a probation success plan after a term on probation
● Students readmitted on probation who fail to achieve the minimum term GPA or complete their success plan requirements
Dismissal indicates that the university has determined the student is unlikely to achieve academic success within its environment and/or the immediate future. Students dismissed are not eligible for immediate readmission but may be considered for readmission at a later time after meeting specific requirements.
